Inhabiting the moment

35mm F1.4 DG II

By Elliot Aubin

I have been a portrait photographer for over ten years, and I feel that my work has evolved alongside me. As time goes by, my eye becomes sharper, and I get closer to a style that truly represents who I am. My choice of equipment, the way I compose my shots, and my approach to a photoshoot have all developed gradually, in step with my maturity and experiences. Each project has helped me better understand what I want to express and how I want to present it. Over the years, I have learned to observe differently, noticing the details, expressions, and nuances that make the difference between a good photo and a truly impactful one.

I work in the field of photography not only because I enjoy taking pictures, but because this profession allows me to create and preserve memories. Photography gives me the ability to capture unique moments, emotions, and fleeting instants that will never happen the same way twice. For me, photographing is, in a way, stopping time and leaving a mark that can be revisited by those I photograph, as well as by myself. It is a way to express what I feel, tell a story, and build a visual universe that is entirely my own. With each project, I feel my eye developing further, and my style becoming more precise.

When I decided to work with the Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG II |  Art, I wanted to create images in environments that inspire me and allow me to explore different moods. I chose two distinct approaches: an outdoor shoot in a winter forest, and a studio shoot centered on dance, in a more intimate and subtle atmosphere. These experiences allowed me to experiment and test my artistic vision in very different contexts, fully utilizing the qualities of this lens.

For the outdoor shoot, the winter season was a major source of inspiration. I wanted to capture this time of year with a misty atmosphere, conveying both calm and mystery. The forest creates a sense of space and vastness, giving the impression of being alone in nature. My goal was to create portraits that interact with the environment, playing with the model’s poses to enhance the strength of the images, while leaving room for the scenery. The mist, trees, and winter tones naturally bring depth and poetry to the shots.

The studio shoot focused on dance, a world I know well and am passionate about. I aimed to produce subtle, elegant images, using backlighting and smoke to add depth and texture. Dance allows me to capture movement and the sensitivity of the human body, and I wanted to highlight the grace, fluidity, and elegance of gestures. These conditions gave me the opportunity to experiment with light and create images that remain minimal yet expressive.

The 35mm F1.4 DG II fitted perfectly into both contexts. Its focal length allows me to stay close to the subject while including the environment, which is essential for both types of shoots. Its F1.4 aperture offers a natural depth of field, separating the subject without making the image artificial. One aspect I particularly appreciated is the color rendering. Outdoors, the cold shades of the forest and mist are reproduced accurately and beautifully, while in the studio, skin tones and light contrasts remain faithful to my vision. This allows me to work confidently and maintain the mood I want to create.

Working with a prime lens like this also forces me to think more about composition and movement. It is a real asset for developing creativity, exploring different angles, and experimenting with light and space. This lens accompanied me very naturally during both projects, allowing me to produce images that truly reflect my vision and style. It fits perfectly into my workflow and continues to support my artistic growth, giving me the freedom to explore and refine my photography.

Giving me the freedom to explore and refine my photography.

Ultimately, each shoot with the Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG II | Art reminded me why I do this work: to create images that matter, convey emotion, and tell a story.

This lens has become a valuable tool in my practice, not only for its technical quality but especially for the creative freedom it provides. It gives me confidence in my vision while opening new perspectives to continue evolving my style and exploring ever richer visual worlds.
